25th April 2017 - During a routine inspection
We carried out this announced inspection on 25 April 2017 under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a CQC inspector.
To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following five questions:
• Is it safe?
• Is it effective?
• Is it caring?
• Is it responsive to people’s needs?
• Is it well-led?
These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.
Our findings were:
Are services safe?
We found that this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Background
The Sarah Burns Orthodontics in Wembley, London provides NHS and private orthodontic treatment to patients of all ages.
Practice staffing consists of the principal dentist and one dental nurse.
The principal dentist is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as an individual. Like registered providers, they are ‘registered persons’. Registered persons have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated Regulations about how the practice is run.
The practice is open on Tuesdays 8am to 4pm.
The practice is situated in a health-care centre which also houses a GP surgery and a community dental practice amongst other health care services. The facilities include one treatment room, and a shared decontamination room, reception/waiting area office/X-ray room and staff room (shared with the community dental practice).
On the day of inspection we collected 20 CQC comment cards filled in by patients and spoke with four other patients. This information gave us a positive view of the practice. Patients told us that they were happy with the treatment and advice they had received.
During the inspection we spoke with the principal dentist and dental nurse. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.
