14th May 2014 - During an inspection to make sure that the improvements required had been made pdf icon

We previously inspected Park Dental Surgery on 2nd and 5th December 2013. At the time we found that the cleanliness of the practice was satisfactory. However, we found that some staff were not following appropriate infection control guidelines.

We judged that this had a minor impact on patients who used the service. We set compliance actions and told the provider to improve. The provider sent us an action plan following our visit which recorded the actions taken to address the issues raised.

We gave short notice of this inspection so that any disruption to people's care and treatment were minimised. We spoke with a dental nurse and were introduced to two other dental nurses. We found that the provider had made the necessary improvements.

Documentary evidence was available to demonstrate that checks were made on emergency medication and oxygen to ensure that it was available for use if required.

People were protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had been followed.

Changes had been made to the complaints procedure which helped to ensure that people knew with whom to raise their concerns if needed.

During our inspection visit we spoke with the lead dentist, a dental nurse and a trainee dental nurse. We also observed one person receive treatment and spoke to them after their treatment. We looked at the records for five people who had used the service.

Following our visit we spoke with four people over the telephone so that we could get their views of the quality of service provided. All the people we spoke with were very positive about their experience. They told us they were given enough information about their treatment options. One person said: “The good thing about it is that he will give you options.” Another person we spoke to said: “I get good advice not just on the procedure but on maintaining healthy gums and the right brushing technique.”

All the people we spoke with said that the surgery was very clean. However, we saw that some staff were not always following appropriate infection control guidelines.

All the people that we spoke with told us that the staff were friendly. We saw that staff were trained and supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

All the people that we spoke with told us that they were happy with the standard of treatment they received. One person told us, “It’s been a good experience.” We saw that the provider had an effective system in place to monitor the service to ensure that people received a quality service.
