![]() The Orthopaedics and Spine Specialist Hospital is a purpose built facility which opened in 2004, and operates as part of the NHS choice scheme where patients, referred for specialist treatment can choose where to have their treatment. The hospital has 20 beds. Facilities include one operating theatre (laminar airflow system) and outpatient and diagnostic facilities.
The hospital provides surgery and outpatients and diagnostic imaging. We inspected surgery and outpatient and diagnostic imaging services.
We inspected this service using our comprehensive inspection methodology. We carried out the announced part of the inspection on Wednesday 14 September 2016, along with an unannounced visit to the hospital on Monday 19 September 2016.
To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we ask the same five questions of all services: are they safe, effective, caring, responsive to people's needs, and well-led? Where we have a legal duty to do so we rate services’ performance against each key question as outstanding, good, requires improvement or inadequate.
Throughout the inspection we took account of what people told us and how the provider understood and complied with the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
The main service provided by this hospital was Surgery. Where our findings on Surgery – for example, management arrangements – also apply to other services, we do not repeat the information but cross-refer to the Surgery core service.

29th January 2014 - During a routine inspection
![]() During our visit to the hospital we spoke with five patients on the ward who had attended for a surgical procedure. They were very happy with the care and support they had received and were fully informed about their treatment. Two patients described their hospital experience as, "Brilliant". We found that staff cared for, and supported people to meet their needs in a safe way. We checked recruitment records and found that an effective recruitment and selection procedure was followed. When matters relating to employee performance were raised, these were addressed fairly and appropriately. Patient care records were well maintained, accurate, appropriate and safely stored. We also found that records relating to staff recruitment and support, audits, policies and procedures, the maintenance of the building and specialist support were in place. These records demonstrated to us that the service was being managed to ensure that people were protected against the risks of unsafe or inappropriate care.

![]() People that we spoke with were very complimentary about the care and treatment they had received at the hospital. One person said,"Nurses here have time for you," and others confirmed that staff were always available to help them. People felt they had understood and been involved in decisions about their treatment. We visited the theatre department and found staff did their best to put people at ease before their operation. Although safety checks were in place they did not reflect published recommended guidance which could put people at risk of unsafe care. Since our last visit, the provider had taken steps to ensure that all safety checks of equipment were completed in a timely way and that staff received regular supervision and support in their role.

![]() We spoke with five people who had used the service who were very positive about their experiences. One person said, “This is not my first stay. It’s very caring as they have time for you”. All of the people that we spoke with said they had received a good level of information throughout each stage of their treatment. Some of the recent patient surveys included comments such as, “Very polite but friendly and reassuring (staff)." "Very impressed with the cleanliness” and, “I was very pleased with all aspects of my time spent here and that was due to all the excellent staff”.
