18th June 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

We spoke with five people who were using the service during our visit. This enabled us to gather their thoughts on both the treatment they had received and the dental practice in general. They told us that they had been involved in deciding what treatment they received and that they were satisfied with how they had been looked after during their visit. One person told us: “He [the dentist] discussed the options; he was really good because I’m not good with needles.”

There were systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. Infection prevention and decontamination policies were in place and we observed one of the dental nurses carrying out the decontamination of instruments used during surgery. The policies were up to date and the dental nurse completed the decontamination process in line with the recommended guidelines set by the Department of Health.

People told us that they found the practice to be clean and tidy and confirmed that the dentists and the dental nurses wore protective clothing when providing treatment. One person explained: “There were goggles for him [the dentist] and for me and there were gloves and plastic covers.”

Appropriate recruitment processes were in place and staff had regular access to training.

A monitoring and auditing system was in place to monitor and assess the quality of service being provided.
