9th September 2013 - During a routine inspection
In preparation for this inspection we reviewed all the information we hold about this location. We contacted Healthwatch Sheffield, NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group and the Midwifery Officer from Yorkshire and the Humber Local Supervising Authority. During our visit we spoke with 25 various members of staff including the head of midwifery services, the clinical director, matrons, the trust executive team, medical staff, midwives, support workers, domestic staff and students. We spoke with 12 new mothers and six of their partners, husbands and family members. We also reviewed 12 set of records and four sets of staff files. We visited three inpatient wards; the labour ward and postnatal care wards (Whirlow and Norfolk). People that we spoke with were satisfied with the hospital and spoke of a high level of care. One comment from a new mother included “Everything has been absolutely amazing." Each woman we spoke with was satisfied with their care and treatment. People were complimentary about the staff and told us that they felt well looked after. One comment included “I’m scared, but the staff have been very supportive.” All of the people that we spoke with told us that staff were professional, knowledgeable and communicative. One comment included “The staff have been really nice, nothing is too much trouble.” We found that people were asked for their views about care and treatment and they were acted upon.
