4th February 2014 - During a routine inspection
There were five surgeries including the hygienist. Each surgery had x-ray equipment. Four dentists were employed at the practice, one was an oral and maxilla facial surgeon. The dental nurses were experienced and qualified and had worked at the practice for many years. The newest dental nurse joined the practice five years ago having previously been a patient. The practice was on two floors and there were three patient waiting areas. There was good access for people with mobility problems. The practice catered for private patients only but there was a contract in place with the NHS for children's dentistry. There was a practice plan that people could sign up to where they paid an annual or monthly fee. During our visit to Jackson & Rigby dental practice, we spoke with one dentist, five dental nurses and one trainee dental nurse. We also spoke with five patients who were visiting the practice for treatment. One patient told us, "I can’t tell you how long I have been coming here, it's many years. I have never had a problem or concern and I am always treated with the utmost respect. All the staff are lovely." This person added, “I have always been able to get an appointment at short notice." Another patient told us, "I came here because I was unhappy with my previous dentist. I've never had any problems here. Everyone is very good. All my family come here including my grandchildren." They also said, “The dentist explains everything to me and what it will cost. There are no surprises." One member of staff told us they had worked at the practice for 40 years. The newest recruit to the dental nursing team had been employed for five years. We looked at three of the dental surgeries and the hygienist’s treatment room, as well as the room where medication was stored. We also looked at the two decontamination rooms and patient waiting areas. All areas of the building were clean and free of clutter. The equipment in the surgeries was well maintained and in excellent condition. All areas benefitted from safety flooring which provided a non-slip surface and was easy to clean to the recommended standards.
