27th August 2014 - During an inspection to make sure that the improvements required had been made

We inspected Langdon and Ryeberry inpatient wards at the hospital. This inspection was to follow up concerns found at the previous inspection in April 2013 and to check that regulations were being met.

Patients told us they received excellent and compassionate care, and that staff delivered care in a timely manner. Patients' needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual needs.

Patients were fully protected from the risk of abuse, as staff demonstrated full understanding of the safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults guidelines, and Deprivation of Liberty Standards.

There were sufficient staff to meet patient needs in a timely manner.

The hospital had systems to identify, assess and manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of patients using the service and others. Monitoring had identified issues requiring further investigation, and appropriate actions had been taken where necessary.

Records were mostly complete and accurate, and stored appropriately.

23rd April 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

This inspection was of Langdon and Ryeberry inpatient wards at the hospital.

Patients were asked for their consent before they received any care or treatment. One patient told us, “They always check I’m happy before they do anything”.

Patients spoke highly of the care they received and the staff that provided their care. However, we found that patients' needs were not always fully assessed and care and treatment was not always planned and delivered in line with their individual needs. We found that some patient care was not planned to reflect current research and guidance, and staff were unable to demonstrate they were able to understand the needs of a patient who could not communicate verbally.

Patients were not fully protected from the risk of abuse, as staff were unable to fully demonstrate how to report abuse or demonstrate an understanding of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.

Patients told us that at times there were not enough staff to meet their needs, and staff told us there were insufficient staff when the needs of the patients increased.

The hospital had some systems to identify, assess and manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of patients using the service and others. However, some monitoring did not always identify areas of concerns or if action was taken and lessons were learnt.

Records were incomplete and were not always accurate.
