23rd May 2017 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

We carried out this announced inspection on Tuesday 23 May 2017 under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a CQC inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following five questions:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it caring?

• Is it responsive to people’s needs?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

We found that this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

On the day of the inspection we spoke with four people who used the service. They told us the staff were helpful and they were usually seen punctually at their appointment time. They said that the costs and possible treatment options were fully explained to them at their appointments. One person told us, ” I am very happy with my treatment here. You are never taken for a ride or told to have unnecessary work.” Another commented “I have been coming here for a long time, they are thorough and they are good with the whole family.”

We looked at some of the surgery records. We saw people had treatment plans which took into account their relevant medical history, explained the costs and recorded their treatment needs, options and advice.

We saw that the practice had clear infection control systems in place. All areas of the practice were visibly clean with suitable flooring and surfaces in place to reduce the risk of infection. People told us they felt the practice treatment rooms were clean. They said they felt confident in the dental care provided and some had recommended it to their family or friends.

We spoke with staff and looked at staff records and saw that staff had regular training. We looked at other practice records and found that the provider undertook regular clinical and infection control audits to monitor and review the quality and safety of the service provided.
